The national standard "Guidelines for Sustainability Assessment of Large-scale Events" has been officially implemented

In the practice of serving the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics, the Beijing Municipal Administration for Market Regulation successfully elevated the local standard "Guidelines for Sustainability Evaluation of Large-scale Events" to a national standard. This pioneering achievement made its debut on the international stage, setting a benchmark for the first sustainability evaluation of large-scale events in Olympic history. The standard was officially implemented on June 29, 2024.

The birth of this national standard marks a new era in the sustainability evaluation of large-scale events such as sports competitions, exhibitions, celebrations, performances, and summits. It covers 7 major categories and 35 evaluation indicators, comprehensively addressing key areas including sustainable procurement, carbon neutrality, venue utilization, and ecological restoration. It aims to enhance the green and low-carbon level of large events, strengthen ecological environment protection, optimize resource utilization, and actively assume social responsibility. For example: ecological environment protection management is evaluated from aspects such as water resource recycling rate, waste classification collection rate, venue ecological restoration or compensation rate, and air quality excellence rate; transportation and logistics are evaluated from the proportion of new energy vehicles, green travel rate, average evacuation time, and logistics informatization level; low carbon and climate change are evaluated from climate change mitigation action plans, implementation rate of carbon reduction measures, greenhouse gas emission reduction effects, and degree of carbon neutrality achieved.

The "Guidelines for Sustainability Evaluation of Large-scale Events" closely align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting its scientific, systematic, comparable, and forward-looking nature. It not only provides evaluation methods, including indicator scoring and evaluation grade setting, but also divides sustainability evaluation into three levels: strong, medium, and weak, ensuring comprehensiveness and depth in the evaluation process.

Additionally, the standard provides reference templates for evaluation reports and satisfaction survey questionnaires, offering organizers powerful tools for self-assessment and continuous improvement. This is not only a nationwide promotion of the "Beijing Experience" but also a deepened utilization of Olympic legacy in the post-Olympic era, injecting new vitality into urban sustainable development.

The Beijing Municipal Administration for Market Regulation will continue to promote the maximized utilization of the Winter Olympic legacy, transforming it into new momentum for urban development and maximizing the benefits of Winter Olympic legacy utilization. This is not only a benchmark against international first-class standards but also a strong impetus for urban sustainable development, demonstrating Beijing's responsibility and commitment in the new era.
