ISO releases a new standard

Recently, ISO released a new standard to guide the orderly advancement of smart city construction.

Details are as follows:

A smart city refers to the use of intelligent technologies and innovative solutions to improve residents' living environments and build modern residential cities. Effective management of public transportation operations is part of smart city construction.

ISO 37167 "Smart community infrastructures–Smart transportation for energy saving operation by intentionally driving slowly" details how to manage public transportation speeds to minimize energy consumption. This guideline covers many transportation modes including trains, buses, trucks, and ferries.

Dr. Hiroyuki Sakai, chair of the expert group that developed this standard, believes that public and freight transport have many operational parameters, and effective management can ensure operational efficiency while reducing energy consumption. It is well known that high-speed driving consumes more energy than stable slow driving. Reasonable speed arrangements can ensure low consumption and low cost under the same conditions, positively contributing to environmentally friendly development. This is a win-win situation. ISO 37167 is just one of many standards helping cities provide intelligent transportation. It supports the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Climate Action (SDG 13).

ISO 37167 was developed by ISO/TC 268/SC 1, with its secretariat held by the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC).
